Poland is a land of extreme contrasts on many levels so ideally this should have been translated in this book. This approach is not harmonious with the format as the required jumps from image to image would be so violent as to disconcert the viewer, potentially compromising the images as singular entities. I don’t claim to know Poland or the Polish by any measure so I did not attempt to paint a Polish picture.
Produced in September 2011, this series was initially carried out in support of Elisa Markes-Young’s experience of visiting the country of her birth for the first time in 30 years. Elisa’s Polish landscape is only thinly represented by this suite of images and they instead reflect an enriching and often visually confusing experience.
